A defeated member candidate in the Union Parishad (UP) election attacked the elected female candidate and tore off her ear in Manikganj’s Harirampur upazila on Friday.
The incident took place at Jatrapur village of the upazila in the morning. The victim was taken to Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
According to locals, Habeja Begum won by a huge margin with the helicopter symbol in Wards 4, 5 and 6 of Boyra union against Nargis Akhter, a candidate with the pen symbol from the same constituency.
The victim’s husband Ratan Pramanik said Habeja was standing in the backyard of the house when Nargis, her husband Rauf Mollah and some others attacked with improvised weapons, leaving one of her ears badly injured.
Nargis Akhter said: "I was insulted while passing in front of the house of the winning candidate. When she came to hit me, I pushed her. She must have hurt herself this way.”
Harirampur police station Officer-in-Charge Syed Mizanur Islam said he had received a complaint in this regard. “Immediate action is being taken against the culprits.”
