Road accidents claim 5 lives in Habiganj, Jamalpur

Seven were injured

At least five people were killed in separate road accidents in Habiganj and Jamalpur on Monday.

In Habiganj, four people, including two siblings were killed and four more injured after a bus collided with a CNG-run autorickshaw in Madhabpur upazila.

The incident occurred at Andaura on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway’s in the afternoon, confirmed Shaistaganj Highway police OC Mainul Islam.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Jabbar, 28, his nephew three-year-old Mosharraf Miya and niece seven-year-old Sahinur Aktar Rupa, and one Madhu Das, 35.

The injured are Bilkis Begum, 30, Md Abdullah, 22, autorickshaw driver Kabir Mia, 25, and Mahmuda, 32.

According to OC Mainul, the bus driver Hafiz Uddin, 42 and his assistant Liton Miya, 35 have been detained.

According to witnesses, injured Bilkis Begum along with her two children Mosharaf and Rupa and brother Abdul Jabbar were on their way to Madhabpur Hospital to see the doctor.

A Sylhet-bound bus crashed into the autorickshaw killing Mosharaf and Madhu Das on spot.

Doctors declared Rupa dead when she was brought to the hospital along with the injured while Abdul Jabbar died while undergoing treatment after being taken to Dhaka.

Meanwhile, in Jamalpur, a construction worker was killed in Melendah upazila after a Dewanganj-bound cement-laden truck crashed into a three-wheeler.

The accident occurred at Jhinai Bridge area at around 10am. 

Rakibul Islam, 22, a construction worker, was on his way to work on the three-wheeler and died on spot, said Minhaj Uddin, a relative of the deceased.

Locals rescued injured Surujjaman, 27, Nurul Islam, 23 and Milion, 23 who are undergoing treatment at Jamalpur Hospital.

Melendah police OC Mainul Islam and Sadar police OC Rezaul Karin Khan said that the truck driver has escaped but locals have seized the truck.
