Two people were killed and one injured during a robbery on the roof of a Jamalpur-bound commuter train.

The incident was reported from Mymensingh’s Gafargaon train station on Thursday night, confirmed police.

The deceased have been identified as Nahid, 25, and Sagar, 25.

Meanwhile, Md Rubel, 25, survived and is undergoing treatment at the 250-bed general hospital in Jamalpur.

Quoting Rubel, railway police's Sub-Inspector Sohel Rana said that robbers climbed on top of the Dewanganj-bound train from Mymensingh’s Gafargaon station.

They attacked three people on the roof of the train when they tried to stop them from taking their cash and their mobile phones.

The attackers first stabbed Nahid and Sagar and then attacked Rubel before getting off the train near Kewatkhali Rail Bridge in Mymensingh city, SI Sohel said.

Faruk from Sherpur, who also witnessed the incident on the roof of the train, told Dhaka Tribune: “I got on the roof of the train from Tongi. At least 20-25 people were robbed by seven robbers after the train left Gafargaon. I was forced to give up all my belongings because they were threatening me with knives."

“Later, when Nahid and the others were being beaten, I screamed for help, but no one could hear me over the sound of the train. I tried to attract attention once again when we reached Jamalpur, but no one came forward since the robbers were carrying knives,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nahid’s wife Bipasha said: “As soon as the train reached Gafargaon, I heard about the robbery. After reaching Jamalpur, I saw that my husband's body was being taken away by the police.”

She demanded justice for her husband’s murder.

The other victim Sagar’s father Hafizur Rahman said: “My son was returning home from Dhaka. After he did not return by night, we searched for him and learned about the train robbery. Later, we went to the hospital and found our son dead.”

According to the police, a passenger reported to the security personnel when they saw blood dripping on their train window and the station master found all three injured on top of the train.

They were taken to the state-run hospital in Jamalpur town, where the duty doctors declared Nahid and Sagar dead.
