Three village heads have been arrested for assaulting a baul artist in Bogra’s Shibganj upazila.
Members of the law-enforcing agencies held three persons in connection with assaulting a ‘Baul’ in Jhuri Majhpara village under Shibganj Upazila in Bogura district on Tuesday night.
According to sources, the 16-year-old victim filed a case against five people, with the local police station. Later, the police arrested three out of five accused from their respective houses in Jhuri Majhpara village under Sadar union of the upazila on Tuesday night.
Confirming the matter, Shibganj police station Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam said the accused were sent to jail through the court on Wednesday afternoon. Besides, operations are underway to arrest other accused.
The arrested persons are Shafiul Islam Khokon, 50, Mejbaul Islam, 52 and Tareq Rahman, 20. While, Fazlu Mia, 40, and Abu Taher, 55, from the same village are still absconding.
According to the case statement, the accused made some bad remarks about Baul Mehedi Hasan and his teacher Motiur Rahman Moti. When Hasan protested the remarks, the accused assaulted him and his teacher. On September 18, they broke into Hasan’s house at around 10:30pm, shaved his head and thrashed him.
They also stole cash from Hasan and fled after the neighbours rushed hearing the baul’s scream. Before leaving, they threatened to throw Hasan out of the village if he ever sings again.
