Update : 20 Aug 2021, 04:22 PM

The Padma River has crossed the danger marks at three different gauge station points in Rajbari district due to heavy downpours and an onrush of upstream water from the hills.

In the last 24 hours, the water level rose by 9cm at Sengram, 10cm at Mahendrapur and 9cm at Daulatdia points.

On Friday morning, the river was flowing 77cm above the danger mark at Sengram, 4cm above the danger mark at Mahendrapur and 34cm above the danger mark at Daulatdia points.

Now, many areas in the district including Bahadurpur, Kalukhali, Kalikapur and Rajbari Sadar are currently at risk of being inundated.

Many char areas in Daulatdia have already been flooded and families there are suffering from an acute crisis of food and water.

Speaking on the issue, Rajbari Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Syed Ariful Haque said they were fully prepared for the floods. “We will assist all those affected.”

Meanwhile, in Faridpur, low lying areas in the 13 unions of five upazilas have been flooded, destroying crops and homes alike.

North Channel Union Chairman Mostakuzzaman Mostak said over 900 families in 10 villages in his union have become waterlogged.

“The district administration has already distributed dry food among the affected. More relief items are on their way,” he said.

Decree Char Union Chairman Mehedi Hasan said if the water kept rising many families who are already suffering would have to be shifted over to the embankment area.

Faridpur Water Development Board Executive Engineer Sultan Mahmud said that the water level of the Padma River is likely to rise over the next few days.

“We have already started dumping sandbags along the banks of Madhumati and Arial Khan to tackle erosion in those areas,” he added.

Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Atul Sarker said that the UNOs and union chairmen were regularly monitoring the flood situation. “Necessary food aid will be delivered to wherever needed.”
