Police have detained a man in Munshiganj after a video of him beating up his wife went viral on social media.
Murad Sheikh, 40, was arrested from his house at Kajirbagh village under Malkhan Nagar of Sirajdikhan on Sunday morning.
Sirajdikhan police Sub-Inspector Md Shahin Ahmed Nayan said that Murad, a butcher, used to torture his wife Halima, 30, on different occasions over dowry.
On July 25, Murad beat her up in front of their house in the morning.
On Saturday, locals arranged an arbitration but the torture did not stop.
The man beat her up again on Sunday. As the locals tried to resist him, he threatened them with a cleaver.
A neighbour recorded the incident that soon went viral on social media.
Later, police received a call via 999 and arrested Murad.
Halima filed a case against her husband with the police.
