Police have arrested Nasir Uddin Munir, former vice chairman of Hathazari upazila parishad and joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam's dissolved committee, in connection with a case over Hathazari violence.
He was arrested from the Hathazari Sadar area on Monday.
Confirming the matter, Chittagong District Superintendent of Police SM Rashidul Islam said: “Nasir was arrested from Hathazari around 3:15pm.”
There were several cases filed against Nasir including the one over the Hefazat violence in Hathazari last March.
He had been absconding since the incident.
District Detective Police (DB) Inspector Keshab Kumar Barua said Nasir Uddin Munir was arrested in connection with the Hefazat violence.
He would be sent to court on Tuesday and would ask for remand, the DB official added.
It has been learned that Nasir was accused as the instigator of the sabotage in Hathazari.
He is also accused in the former Hefazat chief Ahmed Shafi murder case, investigated by PBI.
Hefazat went on a rampage for three days starting March 26 centering Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Dhaka visit marking the Independence Day of Bangladesh.
They clashed with the police and destroyed a number of government properties mainly in Chittagong’s Hathazari upazila, Brahmanbaria, Dhaka’s Paltan area and Narayanganj.
Several members of the radical group died after police opened fire in retaliation.
A number of policemen were also injured during the series of violence, which caused the law enforcers to immediately initiate a crackdown on the Hefazat top brass.
On March 30, six cases were filed with thousands of unidentified accused in connection to the sabotage.
