State Minister Shahriar urges people not to kill snakes

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, in a Facebook status on Saturday, urged people not to kill snakes as they make up a significant proportion of the middle-order predators that keep our natural ecosystems working. He posted the status around 3.30 pm. Within a few minutes, more than 6,000 people had liked and shared it. Many of them also expressed their reaction on the status.

The minister said that there was anti-venom in every hospital and people should not be worried. He blamed the people for killing 256 cobras including mothers and babies in a single day in Rajshahi.Many face book users protested the comment and alleged that the minister was not informed about the situation of the hospital. They said if a victim went to the hospital, he or she was told that there was no anti-venom.

According a report published recently, at least 228 cobras, mostly babies, had been killed in Rajshahi and Satkhira districts. Among them 152 snakes were killed in Rajshahi while 76 were in Satkhira. In Rajshahi, 125 cobras were killed after they were found in the kitchen of a mud house in Tanore municipality.
