A case has been filed against four people in connection with the speedboat accident in the Padma river near Kathalbari Ferry ghat in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila that claimed 26 lives on Monday.
Sub Inspector Lokman Hossain of Kathalbari Naval police outpost filed the case against the speedboat driver Shah Alam, owners Chandu Molla and Rezaul and the lessee of the speedboat wharf Shah Alam Khan with Shibchar police station on Monday night.
Naval Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Razzak confirmed the matter on Tuesday morning, reports a correspondent from Madaripur district.
Miraz Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shibchar police station, said: “We are continuing our drive to nab the accused in this case, all of whom hails from Munshiganj district.”

“Meanwhile, driver Shah Alam's condition was critical after the accident and he was shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital from Shibchar Health Complex at night for better treatment,” he added.
Earlier, on Monday, at least 26 people died when the Banglabazar-bound speedboat from Shimulia ferry ghat capsized in the river after a collision with a sand-laden bulk carrier near Kathalbari Ferry ghat.
Twenty-six bodies were retrieved from the river with the help of divers from local Fire Service and Civil Defence, police and Coast Guard members and handed over to their families.
Five other people, including the driver Shah Alam, were rescued alive and sent to the hospital.
The Ministry of Shipping and the district administration have formed two separate committees to investigate the accident. The district administration has compensated Tk 20,000 to each of the deceased’s family for burial.
