A young woman was beaten and had her head shaved by her husband and in-laws for dowry.
The incident took place in Gazipur on Thursday.
According to the young woman from Bahadipur of Tangail's Bhuapur upazila, she was married off to one Arshed, from Rautbari village of the same upazila, six months ago. Shortly after the wedding, Arshed, his mother, and sister began beating her for dowry.
Recently, she had moved to Gazipur after her husband found a job at a readymade garment factory there.
On Thursday, she was similarly being beaten for dowry by her in-laws who had just come over to visit. It is then that her husband shaved her head.
The victim’s mother said she was financially insolvent and therefore unable to pay the dowry as demanded by her daughter’s in-laws.
“When my daughter called me over the phone to tell me about the incident, I told her to come home immediately,” she said.
“She returned home in bad shape, so I took her to the hospital on Friday morning,” she added.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Md Mohiuddin said the woman had injuries on both her legs. “After first-aid, she was discharged from the Bhuapur Upazila Health Complex Saturday evening.”
Bhuapur police station OC Abdul Wahab said he advised the victim to file a case with Gazipur police as the incident took place there.
