The vice chairman of Damurhuda Upazila Parishad has reportedly killed an 80-year-old man by punching him while arguing in front of a police station in Chuadanga.
Police have arrested the accused Shahidul Islam, vice chairman of Damurhuda Upazila Parishad, after the incident. The incident took place at Damurhuda police station premises on Friday around 2pm.
The deceased has been identified as Israfil ML, 80, of Pirpur Kulla village under Damurhuda upazila.
According to the locals and police source, two groups of men – of Israfil and of Nazrul Islam, alias Naju Mollah – was having a meeting on a land issue at Damurhuda model police station around 2pm on Friday.
At one point of the meeting, people of the Israfil group came out of the police station and started cursing Shahidul Islam, vice chairman of Damurhuda Upazila Parishad and also, president of Damurhuda Sadar Union Awami League.
At that point, the vice chairman got angry and punched Israfi ML. Israfil was seriously injured and died on the way to Damurhuda Upazila Health Complex.
Duty doctor in the emergency ward, Tanvir Mohammed Asif, declared him dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, Damurhuda model police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Khaleq said: “The body was recovered and sent to Chuadanga General Hospital Morgue.”
Damurhuda Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Shahidul Islam has been arrested in connection with the incident, the OC added.
