A man was killed and at least six others were injured in two rounds of clashes between activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at Hasadah Bazar in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Hafizur Rahman, 55, a jewellery shop owner in Jibannagar town and elder brother of Jamaat’s Banka union ameer. He died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. His younger brother, Mofizur Rahman, ameer of Jamaat’s Banka Union unit, was critically injured and admitted to an ICU in the capital.
Witnesses said the clashes broke out shortly after iftar in front of the Kamil Madrasha gate at Hasadah Bazar over previous rivalry. After an initial confrontation lasting around 40 minutes, activists from Hasadah and neighbouring Banka unions regrouped, triggering fresh violence. During the second clash, Mofizur was allegedly attacked, and Hafizur was assaulted when he tried to intervene.
The injured were first taken to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Jashore General Hospital before being shifted to Dhaka. Police brought the situation under control and deployed additional forces.
