Concerned community members on Friday ousted 21 suspected drug dealers from Nuniyachhara of Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila after recent police drives recovered massive quantities of contraband yaba pills from the area.

Police on Tuesday arrested four men and recovered over 1.7 million pieces of yaba pills and Tk1.71 crore in cash from Chaufaldandi and Nuniyachhara areas of the town.

The shocking incident prompted local leaders in Nuniyachhara to mobilize and take a stern stance against the contraband drug trade in their community.

As a follow-through, they have identified 21 suspected yaba dealers in the area and ousted them in the community. More people involved in the illegal trade will be identified to the community, say concerned leaders.

Moin Uddin, senior vice president of Cox’s Bazar district unit Awami League, said: “The people of the community were not aware that there are so many yaba traders here in Nuniyachhara. Yaba trade will not be allowed here at any cost. Locals themselves will identify the traders and turn them over to law enforcement officials. After the identification of 21 yaba dealers, 20 more people have been primarily identified. Those who are found guilty after an investigation by our community members will be ousted as well.”
