The south-western districts under the jurisdiction of Jessore regional office of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) are expecting a bumper maize production as the plants are growing excellently now everywhere.
Farmers are highly interested in cultivating maize as it can be grown even on abandoned land, and also earns them windfall profits, maize cultivators said. They are expecting a bumper maize yield and fair prices this year, reports our correspondent Hedait Hossain Molla.
Maize cultivation has increased substantially in the region comprising Jessore, Jhenidah, Chuadanga, Kushtia, Meherpur and Magura districts.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) had set a target for cultivating maize on 91,990 hectares of land, with the production target set at 10.28 lakh metric tons maize in the region.
Farmers have cultivated maize on 1,205 hectares of land in Jessore district, 46,575 hectares in Chuadanga, 18,500 hectares in Jhenidah, 9,635 hectares in Kushtia, 15,715 hectares in Meherpur and 360 hectares of land in Magura district.
Badal Chandra Biswas, acting additional director of DAE Jessore region, said farmers had got fair prices for maize in the last couple of years and as a result they were now eager to cultivate more maize on their land.
Bumper maize production was expected due to favorable weather conditions along with adequate supplies of necessary seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, he said.
Farmers have cultivated the high yielding maize varieties-- --- Kaberi, Super Shine- 2760, Sunshine, Elite and Pioneer V-92 in order to boost its production.
