Speakers: Village courts to be popularized to resolve small disputes in rural areas

The government is trying to strengthen the local justice system in rural areas by establishing close-to-home, low-cost village courts for adjudicating minor disputes between village residents, said the speaker

Speakers at a meeting in Gaibandha on Thursday underscored the need for popularizing the village courts in rural areas to resolve small disputes to build a peaceful society.

They said, the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is trying to strengthen the local justice system in rural areas by establishing close-to-home, low-cost village courts for adjudicating minor disputes between village residents.

They made the comment while addressing a meeting for making a coordinated plan through active participation of government organizations and non-government organizations to create awareness about village courts at the conference room of the deputy commissioner (DC) in the town in Gaibandha on Thursday noon.

The district administration arranged the meeting under the Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh Project (AVCB) Phase II funded by United Nations Development programs and the government of Bangladesh and European Union.

DC Abdul Matin attended the meeting and addressed it as the chief guest and Deputy Director (DD) of Local Government Rokhsana Begum spoke at the meeting as the special guest.

Moderated by Assistant Commissioner of local government of the DC office Nusrat Jahan, the meeting was also addressed by, among others, Assistant Superintendent of police C-circle Md Asaduzzman, Regional Coordinator of Friendship, a national NGO Abdus Salam, an official of SKS Foundation Modasseruzzaman Milu, District Coordinator of Thakurgaon based ECO Social Development Organization (ESDO) here Atikul Islam and District Facilitator of the project Syed Mohseenul Abedin.

A number of district level officials, public representatives, social workers, NGO activists, invited persons including journalists and other stakeholders of the society attended and participated in the meeting.
