‘Daughters are gifts, not burdens’

Tangail police official takes initiative to promote gender equality among new parents

Update : 08 Jan 2021, 08:18 PM

Mosharraf Hossain, officer in-charge of Tangail’s Kagmari police outpost, has taken an initiative to give gifts to parents when a daughter is born.

Furthermore, a banner with the words “A daughter is not a burden but a blessing, a daughter is the best reward of Allah. A daughter comes into the world with the blessing of paradise for her parents. When a girl child is born, give us a call and a gift will arrive to you” has been put up inside the OC’s office.

Earlier, OC Mosharraf Hossain had posted a status with the message on Facebook and it quickly went viral.

On Wednesday, the first day of the initiative, four couples who had given birth to daughters received gifts from the OC. The gifts included diapers, lotion and a crest.

Sumaiya Akhter Sathy and her husband Saifur Rahman Faruk, who received a gift package, said they had seen a Facebook post that said parents would get a gift if they gave birth to a daughter.

After they informed Mosharraf about their newborn daughter, the OC unexpectedly appeared at their house with the gifts in the afternoon. The couple were very pleasantly surprised.

Another mother, Masuda Khatun, said: "I came to receive the gift after seeing a Facebook post of the police officer. I have given birth to my first daughter. My husband and I are both very happy to have a daughter.”

Father of two daughters Golam Rabbani Russell said: “I am very happy to be a father of two daughters. I was also happy to receive a gift from the police officer.”

Kagmari police outpost OC Mosharraf Hossain told Dhaka Tribune he had seen that people in rural areas neglect their daughters while investigating cases.

He said: “Many people become upset when a daughter is born. I have taken such an initiative to encourage and motivate the parents of the girls, so that no one gets upset and to make it clear that all boys and girls are equal.

“I am trying to convince them that girls can advance in education and careers as well. There are women in various important positions in the country, so a girl is not a burden. If we can raise them properly, all boys and girls will be useful human resources.

“People in the Kagmari police outpost area, who are under my purview, will get this service mainly to encourage and inspire them. Many people are encouraging me for this work,” he said, adding that these activities will continue.
