Unidentified miscreants have vandalized the statue of anti-British revolutionary leader, Bagha Jatin, at Kaya College in Kushtia on Friday.
The incident took place in Kumarkhali upazila weeks after the under-construction sculpture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was vandalized in the same district on December 5.
Images captured after the incident show a smashed nose and some parts of the right cheek missing of the statue that police have confirmed took place during the night.
Kushtia police OC Md Mujibur Rahman said that after hearing the news about the matter, a team of police went to the spot for inspection.
The Detective Branch of police has already launched a drive in the area to find the culprits.
Kumarkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rajibul Islam Khan said that just like they caught the perpetrators behind the Bangabandhu sculpture incident, they would similarly, using the same administrative force, seek out the people involved and bring them to justice.
A group had also vandalized an under-construction sculpture of the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Panch Rasta Moar area of Kushtia on December 5.
Earlier, leaders of Islamist party Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh had threatened to pull down all statues and sculptures of the country.
Recently, after a meeting with them, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal said that construction of Bangabandhu’s sculpture would continue.
Jatindranath Mukhopaddhay (Mukherjee), popularly known as Bagha Jatin, was the a leader of Jugantar Dal, a secret organization of Bengal which struggled for liberation from British colonizers.
Jatin was born in Kushtia's Kaya village in 1879. He made significant contributions in armed conflicts against the British rulers.
Having met the German Crown-Prince in Kolkata shortly before World War I, he had obtained the promise of getting arms and ammunition from Germany, but the supply was intercepted due to betrayal of his men, according to a report published on The Times of India in 2018.
In 1915, on September 10, the 36-year-old succumbed to bullet injuries at a Balasore hospital following a battle with the British.
