A Lalmonirhat court has remanded four people, who were arrested on Saturday over the lynching of Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel in the district, for two days each.

On Sunday, Senior Judicial Magistrate Mst Ferdousi Begum of the Cognizance Court-3 granted the remand plea in the case filed over vandalizing Burimari Union Parishad offices, looting, arson, burning registers and obstructing government work.

The four accused are Motahar Hossain, 21, Amir Hossain, 30, Atiar Rahman Paiya, 35, and Biplob Hossain alias Limon, 19, said Officer-in-Charge of Lalmonirhat Detective Branch (DB) Omar Faruk.

On October 29, Jewel, 50, was beaten to death by an angry mob on the Burimari Union Parishad premises in Lalmonirhat’s Patgram upazila over rumours of desecration of the Holy Quran.

The mob then took his body some 300 metres away to the Prothom Bashkol area on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari Highway and set it on fire.

Later, the victim’s cousin Saiful Alam filed a murder case accusing 200 people — 100 named and 100 unnamed — with Patgram police station.

Meanwhile, ASI Shahjahan Ali of the police station filed a case naming 50 persons and mentioning another hundred unknowns for hindering government work.

Another case was filed in connection with the incident by Abu Sayed Nawaz Nishat, chairman of Burimari Union Parishad, with the same police station. He accused 150 people — 50 named and 100 unnamed — for vandalizing and setting fire to the union parishad office.
