A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed three accused on five-day remand in a case filed over the beating death of Special Branch (SB) Sub-Inspector (SI) Altaf Hossain in Aminbazar, Savar.
The court also sent two other accused to jail.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Tamanna of the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court passed the orders after hearing separate remand petitions filed by the investigation officer. SI Abu Bakar Siddique of the prosecution department confirmed the matter.
The three accused placed on remand are Rakib Mia, Sabbir Ahmed and Wasim. Kashem Ali and Dodi Al Fayed Jit were sent to jail.
Rakib, Sabbir and Wasim were arrested from the Sadarghat area around 8:30pm on Monday.
On Tuesday, case investigation officer SI Md Zakir Al Ahsan, also of Aminbazar Police Camp under Savar Model Police Station, produced them before the court and sought 10 days’ remand. The court sent them to jail and fixed Wednesday for the hearing.
On Wednesday, lawyers for Rakib and Wasim sought bail and cancellation of the remand plea, while Sabbir had no lawyer. The state sought remand for all three, after which the court granted five days’ remand.
Kashem was arrested from Sagornal in Moulvibazar Sadar around 4:30pm on Tuesday, while Jit was arrested from Amratali under Comilla Sadar police station. They were produced before the court on Wednesday, when the IO sought 10 days’ remand. The court sent them to jail and fixed Thursday for the hearing.
Earlier, the court placed six accused — Md Alauddin, Md Apon, Md Jihad, Imran Hossain, Nur Mohammad Rudra and Md Golam Rabbi — on five-day remand, while Billal and Delwar were placed on three-day remand. On Monday, the court placed main accused Zahurul on five-day remand.
How the killing happened
According to the case complaint, an argument broke out around 7:30pm on September 5 in front of an auto garage in Bardebi West Para over the parking of an auto-rickshaw.
Altaf was attacked when he tried to stop the argument. He later took shelter at his son’s business establishment, Grand Fashion.
Around 8:10pm, the accused allegedly attacked the establishment with locally made weapons and beat Altaf with rods, pipes, hammers and sticks.
When his son Ariful Islam tried to intervene, he was also attacked with sharp weapons.
The attackers allegedly vandalized the establishment, causing around Tk5 lakh in damage, and stole Tk2.20 lakh from the cash box.
Altaf was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His son was admitted in critical condition.
Altaf’s wife, Shiuli Parvin, filed the murder case with Savar police.
