3 arrested for torturing minor on theft allegations

One of the arrestees is a minor who is an SSC examinee

Police have arrested three people for torturing a 10-year old girl accusing her of stealing a mobile phone at Nilganj in Bakerganj of Barisal.

Two of them were sent to jail on Saturday and the other, a minor, was put under family custody. 

The girl was later admitted to Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Abul Kalam, officer in charge of Bakerganj police station, said Bashir Hawladar, father of the victim, filed a case in this connection on Friday.

In the case statement, the plaintiff alleged that his daughter of ten years and seven months of age was playing in the courtyard of her maternal grandmother on Thursday afternoon, when a group led by Salil, a neighbour, abducted her and tortured her inhumanly after confining her in a toilet, accusing her of stealing a smartphone.

Later, the tortured victim was rescued and after being given primary treatment at the local upazila health complex she was admitted at Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Health Complex on Friday evening.

The victim’s father filed the case against five people. Police arrested three of them, including a 14-year old boy, who is an SSC examinee.

The arrested accused were produced before court, which sent two of them to jail while the minor accused was handed over to his mother under the supervision of the upazila social welfare probation officer.

Police are trying to arrest the other accused, according to the OC of the police station.
