A Bangladeshi man has been gunned down by the Border Guard Police (BGP) of Myanmar near Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar.
Mohammed Islam, 35, was shot on Saturday night by the BGP when he was fishing in the Naf River. He died while being treated at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital on Sunday evening.
Islam had gone fishing at the Naf river with three other fishermen , said Nazir Ahmed, UP member of Teknaf.
“Despite our repeated warnings, they [the fishermen] crossed the border and went to the Myanmar side and that must have been the reason for the shootings,” said Lt Col Foisal, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
“We are not sure whether they went to the area mistakenly or with an illicit purpose. Nonetheless, we have sent a letter to high officials of BGP protesting the incident,” added the BGB CO.
