The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Abdul Gafur, president of Baitus Salah Jame Mosque's managing committee, in a case filed over the authorities' negligence due to which a blast of air-conditioners at the mosque killed 34 people.

Gafur was arrested from his home in Talla area of Narayanganj's Fatullah on Friday night. On September 6, the case was  filed with Fatullah Model police station accusing unidentified people of negligence.

Inspector Babul Hossain from CID, investigation officer of the "murder by negligence" case, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

"We have found clear proof against Babul over installing electric connections and building the mosque without authorization. He knew that the power supplied to the mosque was illegal,” said Inspector Babul.

"Moreover, they could smell gas for two to three months inside the mosque but ignored it. Gafur claims that he informed Titas Gas about the smell of gas but Titas authorities demanded Tk50,000, which he told Hannan Saud, the general secretary of the mosque's committee," Babul added.

The detainees include members from Titas Gas, Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC), and local electricians in Fatullah.

On September 4, an explosion occurred at Pashchim Talla Baitus Salat Jame Mosque in Narayanganj at around 8:45pm after Esha prayers.

Fire officials said the explosion was caused by the accumulation of leaked gas from an underground Titas Gas pipeline that somehow came in contact with an electric spark.
