ActionAid on Tuesday organized a walk along Cox’s Bazar beach in the demand for climate and gender justice.
Hundreds of women, men and young people participated in the march. The event also included representatives of YouthNet for Climate Justice.
The event was titled “Walk for survival,” a media statement said.
The campaign called for a better and fairer world as well as a just and green recovery in the fight against gender based violence, climate and environmental crisis across the globe.
ActionAid Bangladesh launched the “Walk for survival in Bangladesh” with this event and the campaign will continue across the country throughout the year, according to the statement.
Abdul Alim, head of Humanitarian Response of ActionAid Bangladesh, said: “Recently, we have been experiencing a rise in the number of disasters. In 2020, we had to respond to a series of disasters associated with climate change.
“Covid-19 also pushed many people back to poverty. We need a change in the system in terms of the way we address disasters, with recovery that promotes environmental, social and economic justice,” he added.
At the event, Anhara Rabbani, officer (resilience and environmental sustainability) of ActionAid Bangladesh, said: “We have only a few years in hand to address the climate crisis. Climate change is impacting our biodiversity, food security and worsening our environment. It is critical that we act now to build a better future.”
Tanjir Hossain, lead (resilience and climate justice) at ActionAid Bangladesh, said: “Every day, because of the climate crisis, people are being displaced from their homes. The displaced people, women and children, are forced to walk miles to find shelters when they lose their homes to flooding and cyclones. Our walk today was to show solidarity with all those who are displaced by the impact of climate change and facing gender-based violence across the globe.”
