Landslide halts communication in Rangamati

Locals and commuters have been suffering immensely as the road communication has been suspended.

Communication on Marishay –Dighinala road in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati has been suspended since Tuesday morning due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall.

Locals and commuters have been suffering immensely as the road communication has been suspended.

Rupkari Union Parishad Chairman Shamal Chakma said land subsided on the road following heavy rain at around 3am. 

Regarding the matter, Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Shariful Islam, said some big potholes also developed on the 12km road alongside the landslide due to heavy rain. “I have asked the Roads and Highways department to fix the problem as early as possible.”

Contacted, Shakil Mohammad Foisal, the executive engineer of Khagrachhari Roads and Highways Department, who is also in charge of Baghaichhari regional office of Roads and Highways department, said “We have been clearing the road since afternoon. Communication was suspended due to landslide; but light vehicles are currently plying the road. I hope heavy vehicles can ply the road in one or two days.”
