Bangladeshi Lawyer and free speech advocate Sara Hossain has been shortlisted as one of the seven finalists for Eliasson Global Leadership Prize 2020 by the Tällberg Foundation.
The information was revealed in a media statement on Wednesday.
She is shortlisted for the prize in recognition of her efforts to provide world-class advocacy and counsel for men and women in the world.
Sara Hossain has become a powerful voice for some of her country’s most disadvantaged and marginalized citizens, as well as for the persecuted and harassed journalists and others who challenge the system, the statement reads.
The Tällberg Foundation Chairman Alan Stoga says: “These women and men are changing a world that needs to be changed.”
“The jury wanted their selections not only to reflect the complexity and danger of the crises facing the world, but also the resourcefulness and resilience needed to confront those challenges. All of them are working for the same goal: to make a dark world brighter,” he added.
The winners will be announced on November 24 and celebrated during a virtual workshop on global leadership and democracy from December 8 to 9.
The winners will be selected by an independent jury board. Dr Shahidul Alam, photographer, writer, activist, and managing director of Drik will be serving as one of the jury members.
Each prize winner will receive a stipend of $50,000.
The prize is given annually to global leaders whose work is based on universal values, courageous, and globally impactful.
The Tällberg Foundation aims to provoke people to think—and therefore act—differently about the global issues that are shaping their present and their future.
The Prize and the Foundation’s leadership initiatives are made possible by the generous support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
SNF is one of the world’s leading private, international philanthropic organizations, making grants to non-profit organizations in the areas of arts and culture, education, health, sports, and social welfare.
