Dr Mirza Majharul Islam, a prominent Language Movement veteran and Ekushey Padak winner, has passed away.
He breathed his last around 7:15am on Sunday while undergoing treatment at the Birdem General Hospital in the capital.
He was 93 years old at the time of his death.
Dr Mazharul was suffering from various old age-related complications and was admitted to the hospital on September 30.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Ekushey Padak recipient physician, Dr Mirza Mazharul Islam.
His namaz-e-janaza was held after Zuhr prayers on Sunday noon at the hospital.
He was laid to rest at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard in Dhaka.
Dr Mirza Mazharul Islam, born on January 1, 1927, at Agacaran village under Kalihati in Tangail, was a member of the first two Sangram Parishads of the Language Movement and one of the foremost in the planning and construction of the first Shaheed Minar.
He also organised the Language Movement in 1952 at Dhaka Medical College. He actively participated in the Language Movement as a representative of the medical college
Dr Mirza Majharul Islam was awarded with one of the most prestigious awards in Bangladesh, the Ekushey Padak, in 2018 for his contribution to the Language Movement.
He was a prominent doctor, writer, and researcher of the country as well.
