On the heels of the military deployment by Myanmar near the border, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Border Guard Police from the country's eastern neighbor will meet on Thursday.
With many other issues characterising ties between the two countries, the Bangladesh side will want to know about the military deployment by Myanmar along the border, the commander of a Cox's Bazar BGB battalion told Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.
There will be separate flag meetings between three BGB battalions and their Myanmar counterparts, he said.
The meetings will be held at Ghumdhum near Friendship Bridge under Bandarban district.
"We did not sit for a few months due to the outbreak of coronavirus. We are going to sit tomorrow to discuss all the bilateral border aspects of the ties between the two countries," Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed, commander of Cox's Bazar 34 battalion, told this correspondent.
"Of course, we will raise the issue with respect to their (Myanmar) troop concentration near the international border," he said.
"Apart from my battalion, BGB's Naikhongchhari and Teknaf battalions will also meet with their Myanmar counterparts," he added.
The deployment of the military near the border recently caused a stir in an already unsteady Bangladesh-Myanmar relationship.
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Myanmar ambassador in Dhaka to express the country's deep concern over the troop deployment.
A few days back, the government-controlled media of Myanmar, quoting military officials, reported that Bangladesh had been deploying troops along the border, an accusation strongly denied by the Bangladeshi side.
