A Grameen Bank official was hacked to death, trying to collect weekly loan installments in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia.
Police recovered the body of the bank’s supervisor, Nuruzzaman Laltu, from a house in Filipnagar of the upazila around 9pm on Thursday.
Nuruzzaman, 45, was the son of late Motleb Kazi from Kamalpur village of the upazila.
Police said Nuruzzaman went to collect weekly loan installments from Filipnagar on Thursday afternoon. After collecting the installments from a few houses, he went to Momin Dafader’s house.
Momin took the bank supervisor inside and instead of paying the installment, he tried to rob Nuruzzaman. A scuffle started between them and at one point Momin hacked Nuruzzaman with a sharp weapon, killing him on the spot.
Momin left the body in the toilet of the house, locked the house, and fled with his family.
Grameen Bank Hossainabad Branch Manager Salauddin said he last talked to Nuruzzaman over the phone around 1pm.
At that time, Nuruzzaman was going to Momin's house after collecting loan money from three other houses. After a while, Nuruzzaman was not receiving any calls, he added.
Salauddin also said Momin was not repaying his loan for some time now.
Meanwhile, at night, the bank's people and Nuruzzaman’s family members went to Filipnagar in search of him. They found his motorcycle in front of Momin’s house.
They found Nuruzzaman’s body in the toilet and informed the police, he added.
Daulatpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahirul Islam said: “We are initially assuming the murder took place over the loan installments. Momin and his family have been on the run since the incident. An operation has already been launched to arrest him.”
“Momin was not a good man. Locals had various allegations against him,” he added.
