Three people including an officer-in-charge (OC) and a sub-inspector (SI) have been sued on the charge of extortion in Narsingdi.
The accused are Md Syeduzzaman, officer-in charge of Madhabdi police station, Mostak, sub-inspector of Narsingdi Model police station and Sabuj, a police source.
Humayun Kabir Munshi, a furniture trader of Narsingdi town’s Banichhal area, filed the case with the court of Narsingdi Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Rokibul Islam on Sunday.
Taking the complaint into cognizance, the court asked the RAB-11 to submit a probe report by October 18.
In the complaint, Humayun Kabir Munshi stated that he along with his son Atik has been in the furniture business for a long time at the town’s Bottola area. He did not know that shop owners were ordered to close shops after a definite time due to Covid-19.
On June 21, finding Munshi’s shop open, Narsingdi Model police station Sub-Inspector Mostak and Sabuj, a police source, beat six people including Munshi’s son Atik and took them to Model police station.
Later the police source Sabuj informed Humayun Kabir Munshi about the matter and asked him to come to the police station in order to get his son released.
When Munshi reached the police station, he came to know police had released the other detainees except his son Atik in exchange of bribes.
When Munshi requested Md Syeduzzaman, the then officer-in-charge of Narsingdi Model police station and SI Mostak, the incumbent SI of the police station for his son’s release, they demanded Tk200,000 from him. Otherwise, they would put his son in a crossfire.
Finding no alternative way, Munshi gave TK 50,000 to the police officials to save his son. But when he failed to pay the rest amount, the accused police officials tortured his son Atik and showed him arrested in a robbery case. Afterwards Atik was sent to court.
Contacted, Humayun Kabir Munshi said: “There were no complaints against me and my son at any police station. But OC Syedduzaman and SI Mostak tortured my son without any crime. They sent my son to court as I did not give them a bribe. They ruined my son’s life. I demand justice.”
