We are constantly reminded of the fact that we live in a world so full of animosity and aggression that not even children are safe in their homes.
Just today, a 15-year-old schoolgirl received gunshot injuries from a stray bullet which seriously injured her leg. The incident occurred right in front of her house in Mistripara Bazar of Khulna city.
Injured Lamia Arafat, sixth-grade student of Government Iqbal Nagar Girls' High School in the city, was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital following the incident around 11am.
According to witnesses, Lamia was standing in front of the gate of her house this morning observing a ruckus involving multiple unknown people over at her neighbour’s house. Suddenly a bullet shot from inside the house she was facing hit her on the leg.
She was immediately rescued by locals and admitted for surgery at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
A doctor on duty at the hospital's surgery ward said the girl's life was not at risk but her leg could be seriously damaged.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Khulna Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashraful Alam said: “We have identified that the house, from where the shot was fired from, belongs to a contractor named Yusuf Khan.
"Some young men came asking for trouble at the contractor's house Friday morning. But he chased away the youths with a gun. He fired some shots and one of them strayed hitting Lamia in the leg."
Police are investigating the matter, added the police officer.
Lamia’s uncle Tariqul Islam said: “My niece is just an innocent child. She did not deserve to be hurt like this. She had lost a lot of blood so she had to be given new blood. Now the doctors are preparing for the surgery to remove the bullet from her leg.”
Lamia's father left at an early stage of her life, so she lived with her mother at her grandparent's house.
