Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre in Chandpai Range of the Eastern Sundarbans has been inundated due to tidal surges and incessant rainfall.
The water level in the Sundarbans has risen to such an extent that much of the higher ground and spots crocodiles use for laying and hatching eggs in the centre have been submerged.
Md Azad Kabir, in-charge of Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre, said: “The breeding centre is situated on comparatively high ground, but this time the centre has been submerged by tidal surges and incessant rainfall. It will affect the natural methods of laying and hatching eggs for crocodiles.”
Besides, many other wild animals are also suffering due to the floods, the officer added.
Commenting on the problem, Dr Sheikh Faridul Islam, chairman of Save the Sundarbans, said: “Due to climate change, tidal water is flowing above normal in the rivers of the Sundarbans. We need to build high earthen fortresses to save the animals of the Sundarbans.”
“We have suggested digging ponds inside the Sundarbans and making the edge of the ponds high enough for wild animals to take shelter during disasters,” he added.
