LGED implements Tk1507 crore development work in Comilla

The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has implemented several development projects spending around Tk1507.46 crore in the last eight years in Comilla. Currently, the LGED is working on some more development projects worth Tk324.11 crore in the district. The projects, mainly including rural road development and repair,  construction of bridges and culverts, upazila muktijoddha complex  construction, accommodation of poor freedom fighters, development of local haats (markets), primary school construction, upazila parishad complex construction and water resources development, were undertaken between 2009 and 2016. A maximum Tk755.82 crore was spent to construct 1,851 kilometre roads, while Tk198.44 crore to repair 1, 617 kilometre carpeted roads. Meanwhile, Tk175 crore was used in building 197 primary schools and expanding 682 classrooms, with Tk130 crore in constructing 4,887 metres of bridges and culverts. Two upazila muktijoddha complex buildings were constructed at an estimated cost of Tk 4.43 crore over the period. This apart, homes for 108 landless and poor freedom fighters were also built spending Tk8.91 crore then. Swapan Kanti Paul, executive engineer of LGED, Comilla, said, “35.22% out of the 10,152 kilometres of roads in Comilla is still kutcha. So, we need to get them carpeted soon.” The government is working tirelessly to continue the development across the country. Hence, there will be no difference in Comilla as well, he said. “With the able leadership of Comilla LGED’s chief engineer, Shyama Prasad Adhikari, there are 350 employees (of the department) working for the continuing development in the district,” he said.
