The officer-in-charge of Cox's Bazar Sadar police station Shahjahan Kabir has been suspended after an alleged yaba trader reportedly died in police custody.
Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police of Chittagong, Khandaker Goulam Faruque confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday night around 9pm.
According to witnesses, the victim, Nabi Hossain, 38, was selling yaba tablets in Boro Bazar area on Monday and some locals tried to stop him. When he tried to run away, locals caught him and began to beat him badly, after which they called the police, police sources said.
On information, police rescued the badly beaten yaba dealer. He was then taken to a hospital for treatment, said the DIG.
He was then brought back to the police station. However, on Tuesday morning, he fell sick and later passed away in police custody, added the police personnel.
A case was filed against Nabi under the Narcotics Control Act, and there are two more cases against him, said a police source seeking anonymity.
