Two teenagers drowned in Narayanganj as they jumped into the Shitalakkshya River in order to save themselves during a clash between two groups of teenage boys, which sparked over previous rivalry between their families.
The incident took place in Ispahani Ghat area of Bandar upazila around 4:30pm on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Mihad, 18, son of Nazim Uddin Khan of Bandar and a second year student of humanities in Kadamrasul College; and Md Jisan, 15, son of Kazim Uddin, former general secretary of Bandar Press Club and a student of class 9 in BM Union High School.
Seven hours after the disappearance, bodies of the two were recovered around 11:30pm and police have arrested two people in connection with the incident.
According to police and local sources, a chase-counter chase took place between the teenagers groups in the Ispahani Ghat area of the port around 4:30pm on Monday. Jisan and Mihad took refuge in a boat at the ghat to save themselves.
Chasing after them, other gang members got on the boat.
When the gang members jumped into the river to save themselves, Mihad and Jisan followed. Others managed to swim ashore, but Mihad and Jisan drowned.
After a search of about seven hours, local fishermen recovered their bodies at around 11:30pm. The victims’ family then identified them.
Bandar Press Club former general secretary Kazim, also the father of one of the drowned victims, filed a murder case against 20 people, without naming seven of the accused, confirmed Bandar police station officer-in-charge(OC) Fahkruddin Bhuiyan.
Police arrested six people of the accused persons from Nabiganj Bagbari area of Bandar and they were produced before a court on Tuesday, said OC Fakhruddin.
The arrested were identified as Mokhtar Hossain, 67, Ahmed Ali, 62, Kashem, 28, Albi, 17, Anwar Hossain, 45, and Shiplu, 23.
