Road link snapped as Bailey bridge collapses in Bogra

Thousands of people are in distress as road communication has remained suspended

A bailey bridge collapsed at Sabashpur area in Gabtoli upazila of Bogra on Saturday due to the heavy pressure of a cement laden truck, snapping traffic movement on the Bogra - Sariakandi road.

According to local residents, the bridge collapsed when a cement laden truck weighing around 30 tons tried to cross it at around 11am. The bridge was already vulnerable due to movement of overloaded vehicles.

Thousands of people are in distress as road communication has remained suspended.

The driver and helper of the truck managed to flee the scene after the incident took place.

Bogra Roads and Highways Department (RHD) Executive Engineer Md Asrafuzzaman said: "The bridge will be fit for traffic movement within three to four days." 

The bailey bridge was  built  on Borongi Beel in Gabtoli upazila 30 years ago, according to the Bogra Roads and Highways Department (RHD).
