The dead bodies of four members of a family have been discovered at their home in the Masterpara area of Madhupur upazila in Tangail.
Police recovered the bodies, with their throats slit, from the house located on Palli Bidyut Road, at around 9am on Friday after receiving information from the locals, police sources told Dhaka Tribune.
The deceased were identified as Gani Miya, 45, his wife Kajiron alias Buchi, 37, and their son Tajel, 17, and daughter Sadia, 8.
Meanwhile, police took three men in custody for questioning in connection with the murder on Friday afternoon.
They are identified as Jamal, 35, Salam, 27, and Saiful, 23.
Madhupur police station Officer In-Charge (OC) Tarik Kamal said: “We have held three men for questioning. They are deceased Gani Miya’s brothers-in-law.”
“Primary investigations suggest the murders took place two or three days ago. The bodies will be sent for autopsies. Later, we will take action accordingly,” he said.
Deceased Gani Miya's elder daughter, Sonia Begum filed a case in this regard with Madhupur police station on Friday night.
Local sources said the family moved into the house in the neighbourhood around a year ago. They owned the house.
The house had been locked from the outside for the past two days. On early Friday morning, Kajiron's mother went there for a visit and, seeing the lock, she called for the family members. As there was no response, the locals informed the police.
Police then came and broke into the home, to find the four bodies in three separate rooms.
Police have cordoned off the house and is preparing to launch an investigation to find the killers, and the motive of the murder.
Kamran Hossain, assistant superintendent of police in Madhupur circle, said police cordoned off the house at 10am in morning after receiving information. A specialist team of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) later visited the scene for investigation.
After visiting the crime scene, Tangail Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjit Kumar said: “The four bodies were recovered in three separate rooms of the house. An axe was also recovered from the scene. There were marks of axe wounds on the bodies of the deceased.”
“We will know the truth once the investigation is over. We cannot say for sure right now if it is only murder or robbery as well,” the police official said.
