A man was hacked and beaten to death by a Jubo League leader in broad daylight at Changini area of Comilla city on Friday afternoon.
The deceased, identified as Aktar Hossain, 55, is the son of late Ali Hossain of Comilla city ward No. 23.
Witnesses said Alamgir Hossain, Comilla city Jubo League’s senior joint convenor and ward No. 23 councilor,, his brothers and family members allegedly attacked Aktar in front of Changini mosque after Jummah prayers.
The Jubo League is the youth front of the ruling Awami League.
At least six other persons were also injured while trying to protect Aktar.
Police detained three brothers of Alamgir --- Jahangir Hossain, Tofazzal Hossain and Amir Hossain --- from the spot and seized iron pipes from them. Other members of the family fled the scene.
Witnesses said the murdered Aktar was the cousin of councilor Alamgir. They had previous enmity over a piece of land. Aktar was involved in hotel and sand businesses.
Speaking on the issue, Officer-in-charge of Sadar Dakshin model police station Md Nazrul Islam said that Aktar Hossain's wife Rekha Begum had filed a murder case accusing 10 people. Three brothers of Alamgir were shown arrested in the case."
