An officer-in-charge of police in Joypurhat, accused of corruption and other irregularities, was withdrawn from his duties after the initial investigation found the charges against him to be true.
The accused Abu Obayed, suspended officer-in-charge of Akkelpur police station, was attached to the district police lines on Friday night.
Tilokpur union council member Sirajul Islam had filed a written complaint against the suspended policeman, accusing him of irregularities and extortion.
Ranjan Kumar Mitra, manager of Osman Agro Limited, said: “Two days ago, a paddy-laden truck owned by the company hit a motorbike on the road, injuring one. OC Obayed seized three of our trucks and took a bribe of Tk15,000 before returning them.”
SP Md Salam said: “Irregularities and corruption of police personnel will not be tolerated. The OC was closed to the police lines after we found truth in the charges placed against him.”
Meanwhile, four Awami Jubo League activists of Akkelpur upazila’s Tilokpur union unit were arrested for obstructing the investigation process into the allegations against the accused OC Abu Obayed.
The arrested were identified as Mehedi Hasan Dipu, Ariful Islam Manik, Delwar Hossain, and Rezaul Islam Manik.
A case has been filed against the four by Kausar Ali, an inspector of the district’s special branch of police, confirmed Joypurhat Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Abdus Salam.
Inspector Selim Mullick, acting officer-in-charge of Akkelpur police station, said: “When investigators were about to interview the reported victims of OC Abu’s irregularities at the Tilokpur union council building, the four arrested Jubo League activists obstructed the process in broad daylight.”
