A suspected drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Abul Kashem, 32.
Police conducted a drive to Fishing-ghatpara area of Moheshkhaliapara, Teknaf early Friday, on information that yaba trade is going to take place there. "When we reached the place, a group of drug dealers opened fire at us," said Teknaf Model police station OC Pradip Kumar Das.
“When retaliated, the drug dealers fled the scene and we found the injured man with a bullet wound.”
“Critically injured Kashem died on the way to the Cox's Bazar General Hospital after being referred there from the upazila hospital, added the OC.
OC Pradip said police recovered 10,000 yaba pills, a locally made weapon and five-rounds of bullets from the spot.
“Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight," said OC Pradip.
Dr Nasim, at the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, claimed: "Police brought three of their men and Kashem to our hospital, all of whom sustained bullet injuries. Kashem was sent for better treatment as his condition deteriorated. The cops were released after they were given first aid."
According to data from the law enforcement agencies, 48 people were killed in gunfights with the law enforcers within the past six months. Among them 26 were robbers and the rest were drug dealers.
