A Bangladeshi national was shot to death by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the bordering area of Haluaghat in Mymensingh on Tuesday.

The deceased identified as Abdul Jalil, 26, son of Abdul Malek, of village Gobrakura under Haluaghat upazila, was mentally challenged and remained missing since Monday night, confirmed Haluaghat police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Mahmud.

He said that locals spotted the dead body lying inside Indian territory on Tuesday morning. Later, the deceased’s brother Khalil Miya identified the body, reports a correspondent from Mymensingh.

“Border Guard Bangladesh have been contacted by BSF and a process is underway to bring the body back,” said Abdul Mazid, BGB company commander in Koroitoli.

The death in BSF shooting was reported within a week of BSF’s shooting another Bangladeshi national to death along Naogaon border.

According to rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra Data, at least 18 Bangladeshi nationals were killed and 12 others were injured in BSF shootings between January and June 23.

In 2019, BSF also killed 43 Bangladeshis along the border, the data shows.
