An Upazila Parishad (UP) chairman has tested positive for the coronavirus, or Covid-19, on Saturday.

The chairman is the first person of his designation in Tangail to test positive for the virus. He is a senior associate president of upazila unit Awami League and also a freedom fighter.

Dr Muksuda Khatun, health and family planning officer of the upazila, said the man had shown no symptoms and his nephew has also tested positive for the virus.

Samples of the UP chairman and his family were sent to Dhaka for tests on Monday and the report arrived on Saturday. “They are doing fine and will be treated according to their condition,” added Dr Muksuda.

Sixteen more people have tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday, taking the number to 235 people. One of the infected is a doctor, according to sources from the district's civil surgeon office.
