Mujibur Rahman, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Cox's Bazar International University, and his two brothers have been charged with embezzling nearly Tk3 crore from the university's bank account.
The university's treasurer, Professor Abdul Hamid, on Tuesday filed a case with Cox's Bazar Sadar Model police station accusing four people of fraud, forgery and embezzlement.
According to case details, Mujibur Rahman committed fraud and obtained a letter from the Education Ministry citing him as one of the entrepreneurs behind the establishment.
Later, unknown to Salauddin Ahmed, the founder of the university, Mujibur Rahman appointed his two brothers Abdus Sabur and Abdul Mabud and also his relative Monir Uddin Arif to various posts at the university.
The case states that the accused have embezzled around Tk2.98 crore from the university fund by forging documents, scamming and cheating.
Confirming the matter, Salauddin Ahmed, chairman and founder of the university, said that Mujibur Rahman had not only embezzled money from the university’s bank account but from students' tuition fees as well. “The amount of money embezzled by Mujibur Rahman and his associates is likely to be more than Tk3 crore.”
For his part, however, Mujibur Rahman said he was not involved in the case in any way and said that the allegations brought against him were false.
Meanwhile, Cox's Bazar Sadar Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syed Abu Md Shahjahan Kabir said the case was being looked into with the utmost priority.
