Goods transport strike in 16 districts set to continue into third day

The strike called by goods transport owners and workers in 16 northern districts on Sunday morning is set to continue for the third day, after organisers extended the programme to Wednesday evening. The Uttarbangla Truck-Tank lorry-Covered Van Transport Owners and Workers Unity Council declared the extension at a press briefing on Monday, announcing that the strike would stay in effect till 6pm on Wednesday. The strike was called by goods transport owners and workers to press home their seven-point demands, which include an end to harassment and extortion by police on highways. Sirajul Islam, vice-president of the unity council at Hili, said they would agitate further if their demands were not met soon. Furthermore, vegetable traders alleged that their produce had spoiled as goods could not be delivered in a timely manner. Our Bogra correspondent reported that no vehicles were found on the Bogra-Natore-Nogaon Highway and in other parts of the district. Vegetable whole sellers Sydur Rahman, Ashekuzzaman, Farid Hossain, Mostafizur Rahman and Abdur Rashid in the district town said they had already incurred huge losses due to the strike over the first two days. Traders in the district demanded an immediate withdrawal of the strike. Our Chapainawbganj correspondent reported that at least 500 loaded trucks headed for various parts of the country had been stuck in the Sonamasjid Land Port area since the strike began. The unity council called for the strike to begin from 6:00am on Sunday, May 21, at a press briefing at Dinajpur Press Club. Their demands included collection of toll at weight scaling centres, a halt to the plying of illegal vehicles and the issuing of driver’s licenses without harassment.
