A social worker of the Social Services Department and a union parishad member have been killed in a road accident in Moheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah.
Accident victims Md Abdul Kuddus, union social worker at the Moheshpur upazila Social Services Office, and Union Parishad member Md Lutfur Rahman were travelling to Azampur union’s Shamsul Huda College playground on a motorcycle on Sunday. The two were going to distribute allowances to widows and women in distress.
En route, their motorcycle was rammed by a truck. Lutfur died on the spot while Abdul Kuddus was initially taken to a local hospital. The social worker was being transferred to Jessore Medical College and Hospital when he succumbed to his injuries.
Abdul Kuddus leaves behind a wife and two sons.
According to the Department of Social Services, a total of eight million people are going to be provided with various allowances under their social safety net program during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition, about 187,000 people are being provided with food assistance.
