At least three photojournalists have been harassed by some vendors--who opened their shops disregarding the government directives-- for taking photographs of their shops in Saheb Bazar area of Rajshahi.
The incident took place around 12pm, when a photojournalist went to the area to shoot the unlawful opening of the shops and attacked, harassed by a shop owner named Nurujjaman and his associates, sources say.
Sensing an altercation, the other two journalists went to rescue their mate, when they were too got harassed by the accused vendor.
Despite the government’s strict orders to not to open any shop before May 10, some vendors were illegally trying to operate their business, said Asaduzzaman Asad, president of Rajshahi Photo Journalist Association.
Afterwards, numerous journalists of the districts staged a demonstration in front of the market and Boalia police station protesting the incident.
“The vendors locked into an altercation with the journalists and when they attacked them locals rushed in to rescue them,” said Shahin Khan, one of the protesting journalists.
“We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour towards our fellow colleagues. We will file a case against them soon,” added Shahin.
Boalia Police OC Nibaran Chandra Barman said: “All legal actions will be taken against the vendors after filing of a case.”
