A coronavirus testing laboratory, funded by Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, was inaugurated on Wednesday at Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj, one of the worst-affected areas in Bangladesh.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque inaugurated the lab at US-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Kanchan Bestway city in the afternoon through a videoconference.

Maleque said the setting up of the lab in a short time has been a great support to Narayanganj residents.

The district has recorded 863 coronavirus cases until Wednesday.

“We hope other private industrial entrepreneurs will also come forward like Gazi Group and establish private Covid-19 testing labs in their own localities,” he said.

The minister said the setting up of new labs would help carry out a large number of tests and detect infected patients.

Gazi thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her efforts that helped Bangladesh better manage the situation than many other countries.

Meanwhile, 84 people, including 18 members of a health worker’s family, were diagnosed with coronavirus in Narayanganj in the last 24 hours till Tuesday, said sources at the Civil Surgeon office.

The health authorities on Wednesday said coronavirus cases rose to 7,103 and the death toll reached 163 in the country, while 150 patients successfully made recovery.
