A Bailey bridge on the Shariatpur-Chandpur regional road broke when a stone-laden truck overturned there yesterday.
The incident took place around 12pm and stopped vehicles on the road until the writing of this report.
According to Roads and Highways Department (RHD) sources and locals, the Chittagong-bound truck from Benapole was crossing the bridge when the surface of the bridge broke and the truck overturned.
Although smaller vehicles were able to continue to their destinations on alternate routes, road communication remained suspended on that route for large vehicles.
Nurul Hoque, one of the mechanics of the bridge, said the bridge would be operable again starting this morning.
Wahiduzzaman, RHD sub-divisional engineer said: "All five of the bridges on the Shariatpur-Chandpur road are dangerous for cargo vehicles. Signboards clearly state vehicles over three tons cannot cross, but the truck had 60 tons of stones."
