Police arrested a female councillor after she assaulted two traffic police constables who had refused to let her drive on the prohibited section of a road on Saturday.

The arrested Ruhun Nesa Runa is councillor for wards 31, 32 and 33 from among women's reserved seats and convener of Gazipur City Jubo Mohila League.

"Councillor Runa, while driving her car, disregarded signals from the traffic police and went on to take a U-turn on the Chandana four-road intersection in the city. That part of the road was restricted and open only for vehicles moving on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route as construction work had been going on," said Mazharul Islam, assistant commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police.

When Runa's car was stopped by a traffic policeman, she verbally abused the officer and slapped him on the face. She repeated her behaviour when another policeman appeared at the spot. She was later taken into custody at Bason police station, added the assistant commissioner.

Councillor Runa, for her part, said she had requested the traffic police to let her go through as she was on her way to a program. "A policeman made an inappropriate gesture at me when I wanted to know why other vehicles could go through but I could not. Then I slapped him in self defence."

Bason police station Officer-in-Charge AKM Kawsar Choudhury said a case would be filed against Runa in connection with the incident.
