A suspected criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with another group of criminals in Maltinagar's Bhatkandi Bridge area in Bogra in the early hours of Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Kabir Hossain Minco, 40, confirmed Bogra Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police (media) Sanatan Chakrabarty.
Kabir was accused in at least 20 cases filed at different police stations, on various charges including murder, attempted murder and extortion, according to police sources.
Sanatan said a case being filed over his death at Sadar police station.
However, Kabir’s family alleged that he was killed with the police's help and the whole incident was premeditated.
His brother-in-law Jahurul Islam claimed Kabir’s business partner Tofazzol Hossain owed him Tk10 lakh, and called him to Bogra promising to return the money.
"Kabir has been living in Rajshahi since he secured bail in December 2019, after spending eight years in prison in a murder case. Tofazzol and his men met him when Kabir came to Bogra around 12pm on Monday in Charmatha area.
“Kabir had informed his aunt-in-law about that meeting over the phone before hanging up. His phone has been unreachable since then," Jahurul said.
He claimed that Tofazzol shot and killed Kabir with police’s help and the weapons recovered were also arranged by the police. “We will file a case against Tofazzol and his accomplices.”
Kabir’s younger sister claimed that one Selim, of Colony area, and his men were also involved in the killing.
Brushing off their allegations, police officials claimed two groups of criminals had engaged in a gunfight in Bhatkandi Bridge area around 1:30am Tuesday over establishing dominance in the locality, killing Kabir in the process.
After being informed, a police team went to the spot and found Kabir lying on the ground. He was then rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Police also recovered a revolver with eight rounds of bullet, one air shooter gun, a large machete, and a Burmese knife from the spot.
