An attempt to murder case has been filed in a Narayanganj court. The case relates to an attack on Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in the course of violent clashes almost two years ago in Chashara, Narayanganj, between her supporters and loyalists of the powerful Narayanganj Awami League figure Shamim Osman.

Taking the case into cognizance, Senior Judicial Magistrate Begum Fahmida Khatun on Wednesday directed the Sadar Model station police to record the case.

GMA Sattar, legal affairs officer of the NCC, lodged the case in which nine leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliate organizations were named. Besides, around 1,000 unnamed others were mentioned in the case, according to court police Inspector Asaduzzaman.

One of the nine, Niazul Islam Khan, was seen firing from a handgun during the January 16, 2018 clashes in Chashara over the eviction of hawkers, which Sattar alleged was aimed at killing Mayor Ivy. More than 100 people were also injured in the violence.

On the day, several hundred followers of local MP and influential ruling party leader Shamim Osman swooped on Ivy and her followers, when the latter brought out a procession to protest the local hawkers’ decision not to move from Bangabandhu Road.

Sattar claimed Shamim Osman had masterminded the attack.

The NCC official said the city corporation had tried to file the case several times since the attack, but police declined to record it.

He added that finally the Narayanganj court accepted the case on Wednesday in line with an order of the High Court, which the NCC had moved earlier this year.

Contacted by Dhaka Tribune, Narayanganj Sadar police station OC Md Asaduzzaman declined to comment on the matter.
